At Nerd Rods we’ve been look at the problems with TriFive suspension and frames for several years. All drum brake, manual steering, bad kingpin / scrub radius relation, not enough caster, flex in the control arms, high center of gravity, and a frame that is designed to flex under moderate load. And after considering all of this we have come to the conclusion that the C4 Corvette Suspension is the BEST, performance per dollar solution, for these older cars. Only a tiny body modification is required to make these suspensions fit under the TriFive floor pan and significantly lower the car at the same time.
The C5 (1997-2004), C6 (2005-2013), C7 (2014-current as of Feb.2019) Corvette suspensions require considerable modification just to fit under these older, narrower, cars much less function properly. The 1997 and up Corvette suspension requires even more modification to the suspension from there to function properly with narrowed CV shafts and custom rack and pinions. A Ford 9 Inch will cost you over 3k dollars once you have a posi-traction differential and disk brakes. And when you look at the traditional method of disk brake upgrades, dropped spindles, lowering springs, tubular control arms, 4 links, power steering box or rack and pinion installation, what you end up with is a pile of band-aids, not an engineered solution for the whole car.
In comparison, the C4 suspension only suffer from a few minor problems when compared to other solutions in the same price range, and we have, or are working on, solutions for these problems. The only thing that turns most people away from out frames at this point is wheel and tire choices. With the Corvette suspension being much wider than original and the brakes following suit you are stuck with Pro-Touring style bigger wheels much like the Corvette. So if you have to have 14” chrome smoothies on your car then we can’t help you, otherwise, welcome to your best bang for the buck solution for all the TriFive handling woes.
*We don't recommend the early C4 suspension.
